The City

Meaning “black gold”, Ouro Preto was founded in 1698 as a mining settlement and within a decade, was renowned as the centre of the most notable gold and silver rush in the Americas. Ouro Preto is one of the most culturally significant cities in Brazil with a vast calendar of cultural and artistic events.  As a UNESCO world heritage site, the city also has the largest and most important collection of architecture and art from the colonial period in Brazil.

The University

The Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) is a Brazilian public university which was founded in 1969 in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in the country’s south-east. The institution has approx. 18,000 students on three campuses across the state of Minas Gerais. The bulk of these are centred in and around the city of Ouro Preto, which has become known as a vibrant student city. Today, UFOP offers 51 undergraduate courses as well as 24 postgraduate academic courses, 8 professional masters’ courses and 15 doctoral options.
